World's First Startup Weekend Energy Edition Launching in Tulsa!

Startup Weekend, a sort of hackathon for entrepreneurs that has been kick starting ideas and jump starting companies, is coming back to Tulsa. This is the fifth Startup Weekend in Tulsa and will be the first Energy themed Startup Weekend in the world.

What is Startup Weekend?
Startup Weekend is about answering questions. Do you have a product or business idea? Do you have an uninspiring 9-5 gig and would be like to do something you are more passionate about? Are you interested in being your own boss? Do you think it would be rewarding to be part of a startup that makes it big?  If you answered yes to any of these questions then Startup Weekend Tulsa is for you.

Why Energy themed?
As the magic of Startup Weekend has spread around the globe we have seen how transformative it can be to individuals and communities everywhere. Beyond community building, much of its impact comes through the introduction of open source technologies and lean methodologies that allow startups to have amazing impact almost overnight. Tulsa already has an incredibly rich and diverse history in the energy sector so bringing these tools and techniques to this industry will have similar impact and has the potential to jumpstart some amazing new startups in Tulsa.

Where is it?
This year’s Startup Weekend Tulsa will be held at The Fly Loft in the heart of the Brady District.  In addition this years participants will have unprecedented access to equipment from Fab Lab Tulsa where they can fast track the development of actual prototypes of their products.  Teams at other Startup Weekends have often focused on software, or web-based businesses.  However teams at this Tulsa event will be able to design and build almost anything they can imagine using a sophisticated array of rapid prototyping equipment available from Fab Lab Tulsa.

What to expect?
Startup Weekend is a weekend-long, hands-on experience where aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if their startup ideas are viable, what it would be like to work for a startup and get a taste of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. In addition you will have the opportunity to get connected with local engineers, developers, innovators, find co-founders, meet experienced entrepreneurs, network with key advisors and mentors and gain unprecedented exposure to the investment community.

When is it?
Oklahoma’s next Startup Weekend will take place the weekend of May 1st -3rd. Doors open at 6pm on Friday, the event officially starts at 7pm.  The weekend wraps up with final team presentations/product launches Sunday evening.

Who is invited?
People from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend, entrepreneurs, innovators, developers, engineers, PR/marketing, graphic artists, accountants, venture capitalists, attorneys and college students are just a few of the types of people that are expected to show up.
