Startup Weekend Iasi is BACK again for its 3rd edition – we’ve got over 300 participants, mentors, judges and visitors so far, people coming together over the course of 54 hours on a fantastic weekend.

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures in an accelerated way. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs and as of November 2014, 1,900 events have been held worldwide, involving over 150,000 entrepreneurs across more than 127 countries.
The result?over 10,000 startups have been created all over the world.

People around the globe come together for one-weekend long events to pitch ideas, form teams, get the know-how and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5 routine, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.

 The official Startup Weekend Iasi language is English. The organizers, the pitchers, the coaches and the jury will be speaking English Why? Because it's the Lingua Franca of startups, because we have invited international mentors and jury members, because we don't want to exclude other nationalities and we want the world outside to know and understand what the heck we're doing here. :)

Andrei Tabarcea

Andrei Tabarcea is a young entrepreneur in the field of management consultancy and business development. In 2014 he was one of the partners involved in the creation of Business Angels Romania, a network focused on angel investment that is currently a member of E.B.A.N. He has a PhD in Management and teaches at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration Iasi.


Dan Zaharia

Senior Leasing Consultant – Actively promoting and leasing modern green office buildings developed by relevant developers in Romania, in the cities of Iasi and Cluj-Napoca. Founder of RoGBC Moldova (Romania Green Building Council – Moldova Chapter). Site Manager at Scoala Informala de IT (IT Informal School).


Daniel Buleu

Daniel Buleu is a valued and trusted professional, manager and leader with 20+ years experience in several Information Technology areas including software R&D, Internet services, data communications, business services and IT&C solutions.Throughout his career he started and developed several organisations in both non-profit and commercial sectors and consulted, influenced and supported many more.His involvement in organizations as The Soros Foundation, Dynamic Network Technologies, 1&1 Internet, Embarcadero Technologies, ANIS (The National Association of the Software Industry) and Euronest IT Cluster contributed significantly to the development of the IT sector in Romania.He is a remarkable relationship builder, bridging between academia, professional and business organizations and the IT industry. Daniel firmly believes that communities can only progress through the growth of their members. He supported and contributed to the development and improvement of all types of education – traditional or informal, state-owned and private, small and large scale. His strong involvement with both formal educational providers and with the alternative ones (as various business and IT conferences and workshops, “Scoala Informala de IT”) made him a trusted and valued advisor and partner.He is an innovator, opening new roads, a careful planner and calculated risk taker. Being an engineer not only by background (he graduated Computer Science at the Technical University of Iasi in 1992) but also in his heart, he believes that everything has a solution and always finds a way to “make things happen”.


Stefan Iancu

Experienced IT manager with more than 10 years in the field, with proved results in highly competitive markets. In the past few years occupied various middle and top management positions in multinational IT companies with a strong focus on product development. He is currently driving the IT strategy and product management team of Smart2Pay, a leading payment services provider specialized in Internet payments.

Passionate about start-ups, believer in innovation, change, collaboration and learning as the key tools of modern business. Supporting people in discovering and growing themselves.

Deeply and forever in love with technology businesses as grounds for imagination and progress.


Lenuta Alboaie

Is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi.  She teaches courses such as: Cloud Computing, Concurrent and Distributed Computing and Computer Networks.  As research domains,she scientifically contributes to: distributed systems (cloud computing), trust and reputation in social networks and semantic Web. The research results were published in  more than 50 publications (books or  journals and volumes of national/international conferences).  Moreover, she is a member of many international and national program committees of well-known organisations or scientific events.

Organisational skills and competences are enhanced through her Vice-Dean position at the Faculty Of Computer Science.

In the last five years she has built a straight and stable connection between the academic and  the business environment. Also, she coordinates or is involved in events such as:  IT Summer Internships Program (http://profs.info.uaic.ro/~stagiidepractica), ITC2FII (http://profs.info.uaic.ro/~itc2fii) or BringITOn (http://bringiton.info.uaic.ro).

Adrian Pica
Founder & Editor @ 150sec.com

Adrian is the founder of www.150sec.com, a news/media outlet that covers tech and startups in the CEE region. He also founded Oblico (www.obli.co) , a location based networking app for events and conferences, a project that came out of a Startup Weekend, was part of the TechPeaks accelerator and received a grant from Telecom Italia. Currently he's creating awesome stuff as Product Manager at Telenav INC. He is a lean startup fan and experienced in pitch training and public speaking. He’s an organizer and global facilitator at Startup Weekend, organizer at the Central European Startup Awards. He’s an early adopter and you can reach him anytime on FB. He has one of the biggest collections of Startup Weekend T-shirts.


Andrea Genovese

Co-founder of Roma Startup and CEO of Social Academy, he has been collaborating with some of high-tech initiatives and accelerator programs, such as: Wind Business Factor, Luiss Enlabs, Mind the Bridge, InnovAction Lab, Founder Institute. Andrea created three companies and he is consultant and advisor of various startups in the Internet and digital media sector, such as: TheBlogTV, UserFarm, Formabilio, PixelBook, SpotOnWay and many others. On top of that, he is a lecturer and trainer on brand management and social media marketing at University, a speaker on the topics of digital marketing and business coaching for several companies, masters and academies and co-author of the books: Social Media Marketing (Hoepli 2012) and Italo Globali (Lupetti 2013).


Marius Alexa

Marius Alexa is the CEO of Arhipelago, an innovative media company and, at the same time, a  top representative of the entrepreneurial environment from the North-Eastern region of Romania. He stood out through his active involvement in developing the national business market, particularly through the promotion of several online tools meant to support entrepreneurs. Among others, Marius created the Finantare.ro portal. He has successfully brought together various business communities by creating networks of companies and entrepreneurs. Moreover, he founded and supported several NGOs and think-tanks with a high impact on the regional and national development. In 2010 he was elected the President of JCI Romania and, starting from 2011, he is the President of APEC (Association for Promoting Knowledge Economy).
Having an impressive professional background, he enjoyed taking various challenges as an entrepreneur, manager, trainer, university professor, speaker, political leader, NGO leader and, last but not least, business conferences organizer.


Philipp Kandal
General Manager EU of Telenav

Philipp Kandal is the General Manager EU of Telenav, a leading global navigation company. He is in charge of a 100+ people team in the areas of product and technology. Before skobbler was acquired by Telenav in 2014 he was the co-founder and CTO of skobbler, a pioneering company specialized in OpenStreetMap based navigation solutions targeting both consumers and automotive clients. Philipp is deeply passionate about the innovations in the navigation space, especially with regard to OpenStreetMap and how it will enable the next wave of (semi)autonomous vehicles. Besides this, Philipp is an avid believer in startups and follows this passion as an angel investor and advisor for several young companies.


Vlad Ioan Tăușance

Vlad Ioan Tausance is an associate and strategic planner of the People & People startup and a creativity and innovation trainer at the Friends For Friends Foundation. He has ten years of experience in the media and communication field and has been developing digital platforms for the government and the business environment for five years. As a trainer involved in the Romanian Business Leaders educational programs and a mentor at the CROS Alternative University, he had also the opportunity of organizing innovation and creativity  workshops for corporate clients such as ING, Orange, TNT, Avon, EMC, Brenntag. One of his latest achievements? Being the online strategy coordinator of Klaus Johannis' presidential campaign.


Mayel de Borniol
Co-Founder & Architect @ Babelverse

Mayel calls himself glomad - in the past few years he has spent time in about 20 countries. He'd love to be able to speak dozens of languages, to communicate with everyone in the world. In the meantime he's working on Babelverse, a solution that quickly connects you with someone who speaks any language, who can help you remotely. He's been hacking together online platforms and communities since the mid-90s, and building startups for almost 10 years. But he's still learning every day.


Josef Dunne
Co-Founder/CEO @ Babelverse

Josef is Founder & CEO of Babelverse (which aims to bring seamless communication between all languages) a startup that began at a Startup Weekend Athens in December 2010 and changed his life forever! Since then Startup Chile, 500 Startups and SV Angel invested in Babelverse. Today, Josef is currently based in London, which is also his hometown but has lived and visited many countries over the past 5 years including Greece, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Poland, San Francisco, New York, Japan, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Singapore, and recently Romania where he took his team to live and work for 1 month in a Transylvanian village, throughout this travelling he was growing the community of linguists and raising awareness of Babelverse and acquiring a lot of knowledge about starting up abroad and the differences between cultures.

Before Babelverse, he was a Web Developer working in a corporate environment for 5 years. He can assist you from business strategy, going global to web development and more.


Ana Maria Andronic

Ana Maria Andronic comes with 15 years experience in the legal field and heads the IP, IT & Media Practice at Biriș Goran as a Partner. Widely regarded as one of the leading lawyers in Romania when it comes to IT and online matters, she is also the driving force behind VentureConnect, a biannual pitching event that brings together online entrepreneurs in Romania with top investors in the region. Ana Maria was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2011 and to the Bucharest Bar in 2007. In her IT practice, she advises her clients on subjects covering the entire life cycle and range of issues confronting IT operators and investors, with an emphasis on angel and venture capital investments, Internet privacy matters, copyright and trademark as well as related corporate/M&A matters. 


Martyn Davies

Martyn Davies is a creative developer, investor and startup advisor based in London and currently works as the EMEA Team Lead at SendGrid. He joined the company in 2012 as their first non-US Developer Evangelist. Up until recently he was the central coordinator for the world renowned Music Hack Day events and produced several of them each year. Martyn advises several music related technology startups, helping them raise over $750,000 in the last 12 months. He has been working in technology, music and broadcasting for over 16 years and has held several exciting senior roles at the BBC and Universal Music Group in product management, engineering and developer outreach.


Jan Vanhoyweghen

Jan is a veteran investment professional. He feels like a fish in water when it comes to assessing new or existing business potential, whether on established values or about the potential of new digital start ups. He brings to the table 25 years of experience in media, finance, and consulting services in different industries. His strong background in finance and his experience in executive-level operations, translate into a clear understanding of a client’s business challenges. He has a strong focus on providing both immediate results and long-term value.He is the manager director of Arkafund (now end of life), risk funding, and can look back on several major successes and buy outs in the markets of ICT, design, media, games, lighting…. Furthermore he consults, coaches and advices business executives to start up a business, to lead, innovate, merge and adapt to volatile markets and changing industries.  


Florian Blaga

Florian Blaga is the Manager of Appsbroker Consulting Iasi, a subsidiary of Appsbroker Consulting UK, the leading Google for Work partner, runner up for Global Partner of the year 2015 for Google. We not only manage Google for Work services for the biggest names in UK and globally, we also build custom cloud applications for these large organisations.
Florian has seven years experience in Google for Work technologies, with a focus on Enterprise search, Mail and Collaboration tools.


Florin Barhalescu

Florin is the founder of Icar Tours at Iasi. With 21 years of experience in tourism, he brought the ticketing in the airline industry at Iasi in 1996. Thanks to his 18 years of entrepreneurial activity with the ICAR TOURS brand, he created a network in the Northeastern and Southeastern regions of Romania along with his brother Cristian Barhalescu, who is located in Constanta. Being also an Associate Professor of Travel Marketing for 4 years, he developed his tourism marketing skills for the courses he teaches to his students. Thanks to the Educational Tourism project, his team has made come  over 5000 children to Iasi, to help them discover the city. ”Iasi wines” is another project in which he brings brings  together wine and tourism, history and products, places and peoples. He has also been a student, trainer and manager in several EU projects.


Razvan Gavrilas
Founder & Chief Architect @ cognitiveSEO.com

Razvan Gavrilas is the Founder & Chief Architect of cognitiveSEO, a Digital Marketing Toolset focused on in-depth analysis of ranking signals. With over 15 years experience in affiliate marketing, search engine optimization and digital marketing in general and 17 years in programming and web development, he has advanced from Web Developer to Super Affiliate and Entrepreneur.With a strong focus on everything that is Start-up and Digital related, he developed strategies to boost the awareness of various online ventures.
