The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a co-founder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Speakers


Hashim Gillani
Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Business Development and M&A at Alghanim Industries

Hashim is the Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Business Development and M&A at Alghanim Industries. He previously worked with MDS Capital, a venture capital firm, which focused on early stage investments in biotechnology, medical devices and diagnostics. Prior to this, Hashim worked at MatRegen Corporation, a start-up company focused on tissue repair from spinal cord injuries. In addition, Hashim has worked in management consulting and investment banking. Hashim is passionate about youth development and entrepreneurship. He advises Injaz Kuwait and is currently on the Advisory Board of Directors, Arzan Venture Capital, a venture capital firm. In addition, Hashim is on the Harvard Business School Alumni Board.  Hashim has a Bachelor and Master degree in Chemical Engineering from McGill University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Fabrice Ducasse
Head of Engineering and IT at Al Watan TV, Project Manager at MDS America

Fabrice Ducasse graduated from Technical University of Déodat de Séverac in Toulouse, France - Electrical & Electronic Technical Degree. He works at Al Watan TV as a Head of Engineering and IT at Al Watan where he is responsible for technical operation management, supervision of websites for TV and newspaper and much more. His expertise is mainly in developing new technologies in IP transmissions. Fabrice created a technology in the 90's, MVDDS, that is able to deliver up to 20 Gb/s IP direct to home wireless and up to 200 km range. This technology is used for covering all UAE and is now being deployed in USA. Other expertise is also into Green constructions, which involve regulations and automations for building very high energetic efficiency houses by using natural materials associated to high technologies techniques.

Burhan Khalid
Electronic Channels Development Manager, Ahli United Bank Kuwait

Burhan is a software developer and an active contributor to the open source community with more than 10 years of experience in software development and systems management. He specializes in transactional systems, electronic commerce and payments; backend development, infrastructure and capacity planning and mentoring and quality management of the software development process. In addition to his professional life - he works as the development manager at Ahli United Bank where he is responsible for the development and integration of electronic banking channels and systems; he volunteers his time mentoring startups and developers through initiatives such as Sirdab Lab and GDG Kuwait.


Sayed Abbas Almohri
Technology Task Force Team at the National Fund

Sayed Abbas is the founder and ex-CEO of Next Payments. He graduated from Virginia Tech as an industrial and system Engineer, and has a deep passion for entrepreneurship and startups, primarily in the technology field. He has also worked with the National Fund for SMEs Development. 


Haider Al-Mosawi
Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, PAAET, Catalyze Co, Sirdab Lab

Haider sheds a tear (or two) whenever he sees a poorly designed site or mobile app that frustrates users. As co-founder of Catalyze (a user experience design firm), he aims to help businesses, tech entrepreneurs, and developers build better apps in a shorter amount of time that bring joy to their users.


Mona AlMukhaizeem

Mona Al-Mukhaizeem is the co-founder and Managing Partner of Sirdab Lab, an accelerator program and co-working space. She is also the co-founder of ArabBusinessReview.com, a website offering content on business practices and trends specific to the Middle East. She has an MBA from Hult International Business School, San Francisco and a BSc in Industrial Engineering from Kuwait University. Mona worked in Transaction Advisory Services at Ernst & Young and as an Investment Manager at Global Investment House. In 2012, she helped launch Alchemist Accelerator, a venture-backed business incubator in Silicon Valley, and was a consultant at Naxuri Capital, a seed fund investing firm. Her wide-ranging experience makes her an authority on seed fund investing, private equity and venture capital.


Naser Faisal Al-Qatami
Co-Founder at Snapex

Naser is the co-founder of Snapex, a media and photo-printing company in Kuwait. Prior to starting his own venture, he was an international wealth manager at Global Investment House. Naser has a bachelors degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance from GUST Kuwait. 


Nizar Wannous
Founder & MD - Slingshot Digital Media, Founder & MD Dizly Corp LLC

Jumping the banking ship after a trip of 11 years, Nizar founded Slingshot Digital House slingshotsmc.com, an agency that services, tehnology content creation, web/app development, and digital media. Soon enough He founded "DizlyApp" Give great gifts,  dizlyapp.com, the first app of its kind in the region aiming to change the way the world exchanges gifts. 
With 7 years of business development, passion for technology, fund raising and entrepreneurship, Nizar has built his experience being a strong believer that passion, persevearance and knowledge sharing are the main drivers behind entrepreneurs, the tipping point of our culture and economy. 


Ivica Tadic
Head of Development at Tawseel Group

During his 10-year career, Ivica worked as a Backend Developer, Technical Lead and Team Leader. He currently works as a Head of Development at Tawseel Group (Kuwait). Ivica is a multiple Certified Magento Developer with a prominent goal towards the innovative and sustainable application development, whose mission is to provide everything necessary to get the job done. He always strives to provide best possible business solutions that make his team happy and his superiors satisfied.

Ivica also has a broad experience in software engineering and application development. He developed quite a few successful and well spread business applications and solutions for international companies.

His passions are history, psychology, electronics, automatization and physics. He also enjoys building electronic devices from ground up, so he compiles magnetic field based prototypes for “cheap” energy devices. One of his goals is to follow Tesla’s path and finish high voltage generator.


Mohamed Mousa
Online Marketing Officer at souq.com

Mohamed is a digital marketer with proven track record of helping brands gain the most from their digital presence, work on digital marketing, social media marketing and mobile app marketing for seven years in which he successfully managed to generate new leads, increase sales, build awareness and lunch new products in the market. Currently he is leading Kuwait digital marketing team at Souq.com, largest e-commerce website in the MENA region. His role focus on developing marketing strategies with focus on performance marketing: PPC, SEM, display, affiliate, retargeting and email campaigns.

When he is not launching or analyzing a campaign, he unleashes the geek in himself by researching and exploring the online world.


Hind Al-Nahedh
CEO at Socialobby.com, President of Social Media Club - Kuwait

Hind Al-Nahedh is a social entrepreneur. Digital & Social Media expert, Mastering communications and Smart PR Technology is her middle name. Launched 3rd to market VIVA telecom 2008 the peek of her career, ideas & genuine enthusiasm continues to produce landmarks in her professional life, she is the founder & CEO of Socialobby.com, President of Social Media Club - Kuwait chapter & Girls in Technology Communications team leader.


Mohammad Al-Meer
Founder and CEO at Q8 Software

 Founder of Q8 Software a Kuwaiti SaaS company specializing, Software Engineer and GDG Kuwait Co-Founder.


Neda Aldaihani
Co-Founder of Brilliant Lab

Neda Aldaihani worked as business development and project manager for both educational and private sector in Kuwait and Qatar for almost 10 years, holds an MBA from IE Business School. In 2012, he co-founded Brilliant Lab, a startup accelerator service. His goal was to enhance the spirit of entrepreneurship among youth by matching the best startups with the potential investments community in Kuwait and throughout the Arabian Gulf. To date, Brilliant Lab has helped to accelerate more than 400 startups in various fields . It has also developed 5 different corporate acceleration programs: between Spain that is associated with IE Business School, and San Francisco, associated with Mind the Bridge, one of the top startup schools in the Silicon Valley.


Bader Al Essa

Bader Al Essa is the founder of Richter creative office and is a marketing guru that specializes in using out of the box thinking to set trends, influence, and cause intense impact. Richter aims to make a statement with each marketing campaign by finding the strengths of the clients, Richter uses carefully studied strategies to achieve immeasurable results. Having clients from various industries of Kuwait allows Richter to become creative and innovative with consultations, strategies and operational achievements, hence creating happy/happy situations for all parties involved in the process.


Omar Alothman

Omar Alothman is an entrepreneur and a Digital media consultant. He works with different sectors establishing media campaigns and Creating content. He founded his production house for digital Advertising. A TV and radio presenter and a social media activist. He is also an Alumni of the IVLP program.


Talal AlMuhanna
Senior Strategy Consultant at Shiraa for Project Management

Talal AlMuhanna merged as a small-businesses-opportunities seeker  in which he flairs as a business consultant with 9 years of experience in startups management, feasibility studies, project management and some computers networks works. He successfully was able to augment all of these mixes of experiences to start some SMEs and IT startup like Think Cafe, GTC-Busch Garage, Aamala.com and yet-to-be YaaaW.com. Talal holds a bachelors degree in Computers Systems Engineering from the US and a MBA from Kuwait University.


Abdulrahman Alotaibi
Research Assistant

Abdulrahman Alotaibi is GDG co-organizer. he has a bachelors degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as a minor in Computer Science. he has recently spoken at the DjangoCon Europe 2015 in Cardiff, and has placed fourth in an International Aeiral Robotics Competition.


Ahmed Alawadhi

Ahmed Alawadhi is an assistant professor at the Department of Interior Design in the Basic Education College of Kuwait (PAAET). He received his bachelor in Interior Design from Kuwait, an MFA from Iowa State University, and his PhD from University of Missouri-Columbia. He worked as an interior designer in design firms at Kuwait for 5 years. His works have been internationally and nationally recognized from award competitions as well as academic acknowledgment, including the 2nd place in 2012 IDEC interior design video competition and an honorary mention from the 2009 Retail Design Institute (RDI) Annual Student Competition. His area of interest is in interior design, consumer behavior, digital media, and virtual reality technology.


Mostafa Elzeney

Mostafa holds a Bs degree in Communication and Electronics Engineering (BSECE) from Akhbar Elyom Academy in Egypt. He works at Kuwait University as a Senior IT Systems Administrator and lecturer. He is also the Chief Quality Officer of Catalyze.co


Noora S. Al Askar
Director of Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics at Taiba Hospital, & Nutritional Consultant & Advisor for Talabat.com and Gastronomica ME

Being in the healthcare sector Noora has a strong passion for helping people. She is a US Board Certified clinical nutritionist by degree with postgraduate research in obesity prevention, and an avid passionate entrepreneur by nature. 

Having successfully started the Nutrition Department at Taiba Hospital from scratch, and also co-founding an urban juice apothecary that provides tailor made recipes based on people's conditions, she has extensive experience in product ideation, as well as knowledge in the fundamentals of building a successful business.

One of the top finalists in the Innovation Challenge for the FIFA 2022 World Cup, competing against a think tank of multi industry innovators, scientists and global patent holders, Noora has a keen mind for out of the box innovative thinking, and experience in taking an innovative idea, developing it into proof of concept and launching.
